Beyond Orange Shirt Day

Honouring Orange Shirt Day: A Journey of Unlearning and Reflection  Monday, September 30th is Orange Shirt Day (National Day for Truth and Reconciliation). Throughout September neighbourhood houses and communities come together to honour residential school survivors and the children who were never able to come home to their families. This day reminds us that decolonizing isn’t just a one-time acknowledgment—it’s an ongoing commitment to unlearning and taking action in our daily lives.  In May 2021, the recovery of 215 unmarked graves at the Kamloops Indian Residential School brought to light the harsh reality of Canada’s history. Horrifically, this was just the beginning, as thousands more unmarked graves have since been recovered across the country. The pain and trauma inflicted upon Residential School Survivors and their families persist to this day, and it’s our responsibility to recognize that colonialism is not a thing of the past but a reality that shapes our present. The orange shirt represents the resilience of Indigenous children and the importance of advocating for their rights. It also symbolizes the story of Phyllis Webstad, who had her orange shirt taken from her on her first day at mission school, an experience that left her feeling like she didn’t matter. Her story serves as a call for us all to acknowledge the impact of colonialism and take meaningful steps towards change. Wearing an orange shirt is a gesture, but it doesn’t end there. Let’s make sure our solidarity doesn’t stop when we take off the shirt. ANHBC neighbourhood houses are involved with several events, programs and conversations to honour Orange Shirt Day (National Day for Truth and Reconciliation). There are many different ways to educate ourselves, on September 30 and beyond. We encourage you to join us in unlearning, reflection and taking action year-round.
