Dreaming of Meaningful Respect and Equity
On Saturday, August 3rd, the Kitsilano Commons Plaza was transformed into a vibrant celebration of love, acceptance, and community as Kits Neighbourhood House hosted their first-ever local Pride event. From 12:00 PM to 4:00 PM, the plaza buzzed with energy, as neighbours gathered to honor the resilience, joy, and diversity of the 2SALGBTQI+ community. This day was more than just a celebration; it was a powerful expression of our collective dream for meaningful respect and equity, right in their own backyard.
The spark for this event was ignited during the June meeting of the Kitsilano Neighbourhood House’s DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) committee. The committee recognized the absence of local Pride activities and saw an opportunity to turn our core values of equity, inclusion, and community connection into tangible action. Kits Neighbourhood House envisioned a celebration that would not only uplift the 2SALGBTQI+ community but also create a safe and inclusive space where everyone—friends, families, and allies—could come together to connect, support, and celebrate.
As the idea took shape, the Kits Commons Plaza became the heart of their celebration, pulsating with life and love. The stage was graced by the charismatic Sisi Sinatra, who captivated the audience with a Taylor Swift-heavy drag performance, sprinkling in a heartfelt children’s story about pronouns that left everyone inspired and smiling. Laughter echoed through the plaza as local comedian Ky Sargeant shared her journey of growing up trans, sparking deep and meaningful conversations about parenting beyond the gender binary—a topic that resonated deeply with many in the audience.
The celebration wasn’t just about performances; it was about community. Kids and adults alike enjoyed face painting, beading, giant Jenga, and cornhole, while others found solace in the cozy reading nook stocked with Pride-themed books. The atmosphere was nothing short of magical, with bubbles floating through the air and rainbows at every turn, symbolizing the vibrant spirit of the day.
What made this event truly special was the overwhelming support from our community. Local member of parliament David Eby, two business improvement associations, and several community groups, including Sher Vancouver, rallied behind us, providing the essential support that brought this celebration to life. Local businesses generously contributed prizes, space, and promotion, while six dedicated community volunteers poured their hearts into making sure everything went off without a hitch.
Throughout the day, the overwhelming feedback from attendees was one of gratitude and joy. People shared how meaningful it was to celebrate Pride within their own community, in a space that felt both safe and inclusive. One particularly touching moment came from a 9-year-old participant who excitedly asked to take a photo with Ky—thrilled to meet another person who also used she/they pronouns. It was moments like these that underscored the importance of this event, as it gave visibility and validation to those who often feel unseen.

This Pride celebration was more than just a day of festivities; it was a living, breathing example of our commitment to equity and inclusion, reinforcing the values that the Kitsilano Neighbourhood House holds dear. It showed that when we dream together, we can create a community where everyone feels valued, respected, and loved. As Kits NH looks ahead, plans are already underway for next year’s Pride celebration, and they are eager to welcome even more members of our community to join in the festivities.
